West Girls Golf Team Wins Third Straight GMC Championship

The West girls golf team dominated the entire field at Greater Miami Conference Tournament winning by 68 strokes. West's score of 664 strokes shattered the record they set last year by 20 strokes and bested second place Sycamore by 68 strokes. Lakota East finished in third with a score of 739.

The Firebirds held a commanding 44 stroke lead after the first round with Lindsay Steiner shooting posting a 79. Steiner followed that up with a second round 78 to claim her second consecutive GMC Championship. West placed four golfers in the top five overall finishers and all six Firebird competitors finished in the top 13 as the Firebirds won their third straight GMC title. Lakota West has dominated the GMC with eight championships in the nine year school history.

With three team matches left, the Firebirds will look to improve on their team scores as the OHSAA tournament approaches. The Sectional Tournament starts on October 6, at Pleasant Hill Golf Course- The home course of the Firebirds.

Team Notes: Senior Lindsay Steiner and coach Tim Lambert won GMC player and coach of the year honors. The Firebirds had six players receive All-GMC Honors. Earning All-GMC First Team accolades were senior Lindsay Steiner, junior Jenny Linville, and sophomores Marissa Steen, Rachael Nelson, and Lauren Ellerman. Senior Molly Beck earned Second Team All GMC Honors as well. For Beck, it was her forth year being named All-GMC.

J.C. led the Firebirds in scoring with 9 points as West posted a decisive 52-7 win over Milford on Friday. Casper made 6 of 6 extra point kicks and made his only field goal attempt. The field goal, from 42 yards out, was the longest in West history topping the old record of 41 yards set by Casper last year.

Natalie was selected to the All GMC team following her third place finish at third singles in the Greater Miami Conference tournament held this week at Princeton. Flotner was the only Firebird to qualify for all GMC tennis honors.
