The Firebirds (3-2, 2-0 GMC) rolled passed GMC foe Sycamore for their third straight victory (36-14). After losing their first two games of the season, the Firebirds have managed to win three straight in search of a GMC title. During their streak, the Firebirds have been able to get the job done on all three sides of the ball.
Leading the offense, senior C.C. Brooks has been very effective. Against the Aviators, Brooks ran for 153 yards (10.2 AVG) and three touchdowns. He started off the Firebird scoring 7 minutes into the game and concluded the scoring with a 58-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. With Brooks effectively running the ball, junior quarterback Dustin Huff and the Firebird air attack has become much easier to come by. Huff threw for 128 yards in only seven completions. Huff connected with senior wide out Josh Chichester for a 33-yard touchdown pass that put West up 20-0 after one quarter of play. Chichester finished the game with a team high of 5 receptions and 83 yards.
Not only did the Firebird offense click against the Aviators; the defense took it upon themselves to stop Mitch Allen and the rest of the Aviator offense. The Firebirds were able to contain Aviator quarterback Allen, to 69 yards and an average of 3.3 yards a carry. Senior linebacker Kyle Blevins and safety J.C. Casper both made great efforts leading the Firebird defense. Blevins had a game high 13 tackles (9 unassisted & 1 sack) while J.C. Casper picked off two of the three Mitch Allen interception passes. Picking off the other interception was senior corner Brent Black. Black returned the interception for 75-yards and a Firebird touchdown.
The Firebirds will look to win their fourth straight as West goes to Milford this Friday.
Game Notes: Junior quarterback Dustin Huff now has 839 passing yards and has surpassed the Lakota West regular single season passing record in only five games. Dane Romero held the previous record (794 yards) in 2004. « Back
